Former disciple turned nemesis Anwar Ibrahim today wished Dr Mahathir Mohamad a happy 100th birthday.
In a social media post, the prime minister said he and his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail prayed for Mahathir to be blessed with health, peace, and physical strength to continue to live a meaningful life.
“His healthy lifestyle and never-ending contributions are an example to an ageing country that still has high hopes.
“May God continue to bless Mahathir, God willing,” he said.
In the 1990s, Anwar was Mahathir’s heir apparent, but the two had a falling out culminating in the former’s sacking as deputy prime minister, which in turn gave birth to Malaysia’s “Reformasi” movement.
The two briefly made amends in 2016 in a bid to oust Najib Abdul Razak from power, and maintained a facade of civility after Pakatan Harapan ousted BN in the 2018 general election.
However, Mahathir’s failure to live up to a promise to hand over power to Anwar after becoming prime minister again became a sore point, and their relationship publicly broke down again after the 2020 Sheraton Move.
Since then, Mahathir has remained a thorn in Anwar’s side.
Despite this, Anwar’s government approved RM486,000 for Mahathir and his entourage to go to Japan and attend the annual Nikkei conference in May. - Mkini
