Former investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has been appointed as the chairperson of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida).
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said Zafrul will serve for two years, with the appointment taking effect today.
“Apart from leading Mida, Zafrul will also be given other responsibilities, which will be decided and announced by the prime minister later,” PMO added.
Zafrul’s new appointment came about after serving as a Dewan Negara member for two terms.
He was initially made finance minister in 2020 during the premiership of Muhyiddin Yassin. He retained the post after Ismail Sabri Yaakob assumed the premiership in 2021.
Zafrul was then moved to the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry after Anwar Ibrahim became prime minister in 2022.
In his podcast last week, Rafizi Ramli said Zafrul was initially slated to leave Umno and join PKR, with the intention of becoming an MP through a by-election last year.
According to the former economy minister, if the plan had been successful, it would have helped Zafrul to save his position in the government, while he, in turn, was expected to help “melicinkan jalan” (pave the way) for Nurul Izzah Anwar to replace Amirudin Shari as Selangor menteri besar.
He also claimed that Anwar had been the biggest proponent of Zafrul’s entry into the party.
However, Rafizi said the plan failed due to Umno’s fierce objection to PKR poaching their party members. - Mkini
