PETALING JAYA:
Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional could reach a different type of pact for the next Melaka state election despite their convincing victory in the Negeri Sembilan polls on Saturday.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said the cooperation BN and PN demonstrated in Negeri Sembilan may not necessarily be replicated in Melaka as this is subject to local developments.

Hadi said what is more important is that they still worked together, Sinar Harian reported.

He said while BN has 20 seats in the 28-member Melaka assembly, the Umno-led coalition holds none of the state’s parliamentary seats.

“We will discuss the seat allocation (for the Melaka polls) differently from the way we did in Negeri Sembilan,” he was quoted as saying.

After securing a two-thirds majority in the Negeri Sembilan polls, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that BN and PN will continue their cooperation in the Melaka state election.

BN and PN did not join forces in the Johor polls, but Hadi said PN deliberately allowed Umno to take the lead to ensure the party would not lose control of the state government.

The Melaka polls are only due early next year, but chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh has said the state election could be held in September. - FMT
