Dr Hasmah Ali accorded state funeral, laid to rest at Pusara Negara

 The wife of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad died at the age of 100 today.

Dr Hasmah Ali was laid to rest at Pusara Negara, Presint 20, here, where she was accorded a state funeral, this evening.

She was buried beside Endon Mahmood, the first wife of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the country’s fifth prime minister.

Hasmah died at about 9.25am today at the National Heart Institute. She was 100.

She leaves behind her husband, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and seven children, three of them adopted.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had earlier said the government decided to accord Hasmah a state funeral in recognition of her contributions.

Hasmah’s death sparked a wave of tributes, with many highlighting her warmth and grace as well as her contributions to the nation.

She had, as the prime minister’s wife, advocated maternal health, family planning, literacy, drug abuse prevention, and mental health. - FMT
