Malaysia's Home Ministry has admitted blacking out parts of The Economist's article entitled Taken to the Cleaners on the July 9 Bersih rally, but only removed sentences that were either false or misleading.
Abdul Aziz Md Nor, publications control and Quranic text division secretary at the ministry, told the Star that the affected parts may misinform readers.
He said the instructions were passed to the publisher of the British-based magazine after consultation with the police.
Abdul Aziz added that they received the copy before it hit the news-stands, which is standard procedure.
The article covers the July 9 rally organised by free and fair elections watchdog body Bersih 2.0. The police crackdown using tear gas and acid-laced water led to the arrest of nearly 1,700 people, injuring thousands and causing one death.
