Villagers raise RM8,000 themselves to rebuild damaged road at Mount Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: Folks living at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu are taking it upon themselves to rebuild a road to the villages cut off by a massive landslide more than a month ago.
Villagers of Kampung Kiau Taburi, Kiau Nulu and Kiau Bersatu have raised RM8,000 among themselves apart from securing a RM10,000 donation to rebuild the road linking their villages to the Kota Kinabalu-Ranau trunk road that was cut off following the May 9 landslide.
The villagers also managed to get help from a construction company to donate rocks and stones apart from the use of its tractors to rebuild road which they said was crucial for them to get back to their normal daily lives.
Damaged road: The road work in progress at Kampung Kiau after the major landslide last month.
The three villages come under the Mukim Nabalu and the road reconstruction effort was initiated by the administrative area’s Disaster Management Committee whose chairman Jounis Goliong said the alternative route built by the Public Works Department was unsafe.
“It’s not that we are ungrateful to the PWD for building the alternative route but we found it to be unsafe to use even in a slightest drizzle.
“Though the authorities said the existing road is not safe but we prefer to use it over the alternative route,” he said yesterday.
Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, the state Infrastructure Development Minister, had said the damaged road could not be repaired for now as it was prone to earth movements and more land slips, thus posing a hazard to users.
Jounis said the committee had decided to repair the existing road after villagers had to carry five people in need of emergency medical treatment through the cut off stretch over the past several weeks.
Jounis said the road was also essential for the villagers to take out their agriculture produce such as pineapple and sweet potatoes and yams.
“Since being cut off, the kampung folk have lost about RM20,000 in potential income,” he added.
He said the Disaster Relief Committee would constantly monitor the situation of the repaired road to ensure the safety of those using it. - Star

  1. kalau kawasan jalan sebelum ni terdedah dengan pergerakan bumi yang menyebabkan tanah runtuh, lebih baik cari jalan alternatif lain.
