Councils reject Isma's 'supremacy' billboard

Two local councils in Selangor have rejected an application by right wing group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) to put up billboards promoting the "supremacy" of Islam and Malays.

According to Isma, the Shah Alam and Selayang local councils rejected the applications for the billboards due to “sensitive” content.

The mock-up of the billboard contains a picture of Isma leaders and the NGO's logo.

It also features the caption: ‘Marilah kita sama-sama berjuang demi keagungan Islam dan kedaulatan bangsa Melayu di Tanah Melayu ini.’ (Let’s fight for the sake of the greatness of Islam and supremacy of Malays in Tanah Melayu).

Tanah Melayu, which literally means Malay Land, is the defunct name for Malaya, or what is now referred to as Peninsular Malaysia.

Isma said the rejection was made yesterday to vendor company Out of Home Media Sdn Bhd, who had submitted the application for Isma.

'Islam, Malays core of national identity'

Condemning the decision, Isma secretary-general Dr Ahmad Kamsani Samingan said that the move caught Isma by surprise.

“There is nothing wrong with calling for the greatness of Islam and Malay supremacy as both are the core of nationhood, as stated in the Federal Constitution…

“Respecting the greatness of Islam and Malay supremacy is the key to national stability and harmony since its inception.

“So it is reasonable for the rakyat to reminded of this, so there will be no group trying to challenge the matter, which in effect, challenges the Federal Constitution,” Ahmad Kamsani tells Isma’s mouthpiece Ismaweb.

He also argued that Malaysians should be reminded that the Malay race and Islam is the national identity on which Malaysia was built on.

He said the message is in keeping with the month of August, when Malaysia celebrates Independence Day, and that the councils were being anti-Islam, anti-Malay and anti-national.
