WRONG, CIVIL SERVICE MUST BE NEUTRAL! Civil servants must support & be loyal to Umno-BN govt - Najib
KUALA LUMPUR - Civil servants must be loyal to the government they serve and use proper channels to air their grouses instead of openly criticising the establishment.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak (pix) said civil servants must be steadfast in their support to the government but also urged them to not indulge in blind loyalty.
"Civil servants must have loyalty in principle, serving and supporting the government of the day; do not go around criticising the government on Facebook or Twitter.
"Civil servants must not practice blind loyalty, but there are proper channels where grouses can be voiced," he said.
At the launch of Petronas' gallery "MY story: Transforming the Nation", Najib said a good civil servant must have four traits - loyalty, dedication, competency, and integrity.
He said a good civil servant will do more than he or she is told and will go the extra mile to perform their duties.
Najib said competency also means that civil servants must know how to communicate well and occasionally also how to deal with the media due to the increased competitiveness in this day and age.
He joked that it would also be much easier for him to perform the duties of a prime minister if it was during his father Tun Abdul Razak's time a few decades ago as the demands on the job was much less.
Finally, Najib said a good civil servant must have integrity and if he or she serves the government and the people with integrity, then they would have served the nation well.

He added that the civil service has contributed significantly to the nation's achievements and the Petronas twin towers are a standing monument to the nation's success.
"Former civil servants cannot be separated from the nation's success. Petronas is formed under the advise of the civil service and now it is a fortune 500 company," he said.
The Alumni Association of Administration and Diplomatic Officers (PTD) organised the MY story gallery in conjunction of the National Day Celebrations.
The gallery features art works and photographs of iconic moments in Malaysian history such as World War II, the Malayan Emergency, the formulation of the Rukun Negara, and the Great Floods of Kuala Lumpur in 1971. -Sundaily
