JOHOR BAHRU: One-stop service counters for single women will be set up at all urban transformation centres, the deputy minister of women’s affairs, Azizah Mohd Dun, said today.
The counters are expected to open in June and will provide easy access to government services, particularly for those wishing to register with the Women’s Development Department for privileges available for single mothers.
“These one-stop counters will also provide advice for those facing economic struggles, counselling services and legal aid for single mothers in need of help,” she told reporters here.
“The ministry will work closely with non-governmental organisations which focuses on single mothers, to set up the counters to ensure single mothers in rural areas are not left out.”
Azizah said the records showed that so far, a total of 83,775 single mothers had registered with the single mother empowerment database but the number was considered small compared to the figure of 235,240 single mothers recorded in the 2010 Population and Housing Census.
She said there were 8,254 single mothers in Johor, 6,022 in Negeri Sembilan and 4,441 in Malacca who had registered with the department.
