Regulating billboards not IGP's business, says PKR Youth

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar should step down and apply for a position as a local council enforcement officer if he is overly concerned with regulating billboards, PKR Youth deputy chief Afif Bahardin said today.
"The IGP should be concerned with more serious crimes.
"If he wants to take care of billboards, he should go and work with the local council. Become an enforcement officer," said Afif, when asked for comment on Khalid's remarks regarding the Free Anwar billboards erected around Selangor and Penang.
Afif was speaking during a press conference at PKR headquarters here.
Khalid had yesterday said cops will act against Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos for threatening to torch billboards calling for jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's freedom.
Khalid, however, also said he wants the billboards, which he described as "seditious" to be removed.
"PDRM, please track down billboards that contain seditious words and confuse the rakyat by referring to Anwar as a 'political prisoner'," Khalid had said on Twitter.
Khalid's statement came after Jamal's second failed attempt to torch one such billboard in Sabak Bernam, said to be due to heavy police presence.
On Wednesday, Jamal had threatened to torch a similar billboard in Ampang but later backtracked, putting up a two-metre banner with graphic details about sodomy on the billboard instead.
'Non-issue'
Commenting further, Afif reiterated the Selangor government's stand that the billboards were a "non-issue" as approvals had been given by the local municipal councils.
"There is no issue...It is only an issue to Umno," he added.
On disputes over Anwar's status as a political detainee, Afif pointed out that this recognition was given by international rights groups such as Amnesty International.
"If the IGP has a problem with that, go and report to the international bodies," he said.
Anwar was, in February last year, sentenced to five years jail for sodomy, a charge he claimed was politically motivated.
The United Nations’ Working Group on Arbitrary Detention also recognises Anwar’s incarceration as ‘arbitrary’. -Mkini
