WHEN UMNO EQUATES DISSENSION WITH DISLOYALTY

Kijal assemblyman Ahmad Said has been denied his constituency allocations and treated like an opposition rep for having moved a no-confidence against the Terengganu menteri besar.

Leadership by example was one of the values propagated during the administration of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The present administration of Prime Minister Najib Razak is also doing the same, but without announcing it. Anyone who fails to toe the party line will face punishment.

Following Umno supreme council's decision to suspend Muhyiddin Yassin as party deputy president, the Umno-led Terengganu state government has taken a cue by going hard on dissenters, to the extent of treating them as opposition.

A New Straits Times report over the weekend revealed that former state menteri besar and Kijal assemblyman Ahmad Said will no longer receive his annual constituency allocation of RM542,000.

Of the amount, RM492,852 was meant for general programmes for the next six months and another RM50,000 for youth programmes.

The suspension of constituency allocation funds was effective March 9 with the approval of Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.

Why the sudden decision to sideline Ahmad Said?

Well, he did move a motion of no confidence against Ahmad Razif on March 8 but the motion was rejected by Terengganu state assembly speaker Mohd Zubir Embong on the grounds that it was moved without notice and violated the state legislative assembly's standing orders.

If Ahmad Said had been successful with his motion, Umno's rule in the state could have come to an end. As it stands, the state assembly is made up of 17 Umno, 14 PAS and one PKR state reps.

Denial of constituency funds to elected reps is only done to the opposition and this is the first time an Umno/BN rep had been deemed as an opposition and denied such funds.

Even in opposition held constituencies, the federal government or state fund is given to the BN's constituency coordinators.

In Ahmad Said's case, he is obviously treated as an outcast for his attempt to derail the state Umno, thus the decision to pull the purse from him.

But one does wonder why Umno has not taken any action against him.
