A bill to restore the Parliament Service Act is scheduled to be tabled during the October session of Parliament.
According to The Star, Dewan Negara president Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the cabinet will scrutinise the draft bill soon.
"I initiated the proposal when I was (law) minister during the previous administration," said Wan Junaidi.
Wan Junaidi served as minister for law and parliamentary affairs under the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration between August 2021 and October 2022.
He said the draft bill was finally completed on Wednesday night.
"It marks the first real step for the PSA to be revived after 30 years," he said.
The Parliament Service Act was a law that allowed Parliament to administer its affairs - including the selection of top administrative staff and finances - without referring to Putrajaya.
Six-month transition
This law was repealed during Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s administration in 1992.
He said a council, comprising representatives of various ministries and lawmakers, will be set up to oversee Parliamentary affairs.
"My promise to the prime minister is that I will get the bill tabled by this October.
"Once the law is passed and comes into force, a six-month transition will be given for its implementation," he said.
The transition period will allow current Parliament staff to decide whether they would continue to work for Parliament or the civil service. - Mkini
