Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party leadership will act against Rembia state assemblyperson Muhammad Jailani Khamis, who attended a Perikatan Nasional campaign event in Johor on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur last night, Zahid said he had been informed and the matter was being investigated.
"I will receive a report (soon) and we will do something about it," he said, according to Sinar Harian.
Jailani won the Rembia seat in 2018 on a PKR ticket but defected in 2020. He joined Umno the subsequent year, ahead of the Malacca legislative assembly elections.
After being re-elected, he was appointed to then-chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali's state executive council.
However, he was removed from the council after Ab Rauf Yusoh took over as chief minister in March this year.
Jailani's relationship with Rauf had been strained prior to the change of chief minister.
Before Rauf's appointment, Jailani foreshadowed the event by claiming that Malacca was about to receive a "backdoor" chief minister.
As for his presence at a PN event, Jailani told The Star that it did not mean he plans to leave Umno.
Defecting will likely violate Malaccan laws, which will require him to vacate his seat and trigger a by-election. - Mkini
