Just come back, don't give excuses: Azam tells Muhyiddin's son-in-law

 

The lawyer representing Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin’s son-in-law should assist authorities in bringing back his client instead of making press statements, said MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki.

As for Muhammad Adlan Berhan, who is abroad but denies being a fugitive, the top graft buster said: “Just come back. Don’t give so many excuses.”

Azam also reminded the lawyer, Baljit Singh Sidhu, that he has a duty as a legal professional to assist MACC in its investigation.

Earlier, Baljit issued a statement denying that his client fled Malaysia after discovering that he is on MACC’s wanted list.

He said Adlan (above, right) was prepared to return if the elements of “threats and persecution” against him are removed.

This was in response to MACC’s statement on Aug 7 that it was on the hunt for Adlan, 48, and Mansoor Saat, 69.

The anti-graft agency is seeking the two to facilitate investigations into a project regarding the registration and storage of biometric information for foreign workers.

According to Baljit, Adlan is currently on a business trip overseas and has purportedly informed MACC investigators that he would return after his work is done.

‘How much longer can we wait?’

Commenting on this, Azam told Malaysiakini that the MACC had attempted to secure Adlan’s cooperation since June to no avail.

He also denied claims that MACC’s recent statement on Adlan and the other individual was related to the state elections.

“Some people can simply accuse us, questioning why only now we are looking for him (Adlan).

“We contacted him in June, now it is already August. Whenever my officer called him, he gave his promise (to return but never did).

“If you are the investigator, how much longer can you wait? It has nothing to do with the election or whatnot,” he added.

Meanwhile, Malaysiakini learned that Adlan had allegedly left the country for Australia on May 17.

Sources claimed that the authorities believe that he might have since travelled to Dubai.

MACC is also considering requesting Interpol’s help to track him down, with Azam suggesting that his whereabouts are known to the commission. - Mkini
