SEPANG: A group of up to 15 MYAirline employees have filed a police report against the troubled carrier over unpaid salaries.
Abdul Salam Nek Kamal, a customer service officer at MYAirline, said the employees are facing significant financial hardships after the airline failed to pay them their salaries for the past two months.
“Our employment status is uncertain as we have not been terminated but (we remain) unpaid. It’s a stressful situation, especially for those of us with young children.
“What is most heartbreaking is that some employees have been evicted from their homes because they cannot pay rent,” he told reporters outside the Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi police headquarters here.
Abdul Salam said that he previously worked in a similar role at a different company but decided to switch to MYAirline as he was offered a higher salary.
“When we ask about our salary, their (management’s) response is always, ‘Please hold on a bit’.
“But how long is ‘a bit’? A year? Two years? They really should give us a definitive timeline,” he said.
Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) secretary-general Kamarul Baharin Mansor, who accompanied the employees, criticised MYAirline for its “unprofessionalism” and urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the company.
He also said MTUC wants the government to ensure the workers’ salaries are paid.
On Oct 12, Malaysian budget carrier MYAirline abruptly suspended operations, citing “severe financial challenges” less than 11 months after it took to the skies.
The airline later said its suspension of operations was due to its lack of a back-up plan to resolve its faltering finances, and that its failure to inform passengers of the suspension stemmed from an “oversight”. - FMT
