Anwar backs royal reminder not to meddle in Islamic affairs

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim backed Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s reminder for the people, especially non-Muslims, to respect and not interfere in matters related to Islam.

“However, if there are any concerns and to avoid any confusion, the non-Muslims can write to the National Council of Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) for the issues to be resolved in a harmonious and civilized manner,” Anwar said in a statement on Facebook today.

The Selangor ruler, who is also the MKI chairperson, made the remark yesterday in response to the call by Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham for the government to include non-Muslim experts in the special committee to review the jurisdiction of the Syariah Court.

In a post on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page, the sultan said MKI is entrusted with the responsibility to oversee all matters related to the Muslim community.

His Highness added that the council comprises experts knowledgeable in various fields, particularly those involving Islamic law and religion.

Therefore, he hoped that politicians, especially those who are non-Muslims, refrain from interfering in matters related to Islam.

The ruler also urged followers of other religions to emulate Muslims who do not interfere in the affairs of other faiths in Malaysia.

Sultan Sharafuddin also took note of the statement issued by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

Earlier, Loke asserted that Ngeh’s proposal was a mistake and misunderstanding about the committee’s source of power, adding that DAP is committed to upholding the principle of mutual respect and harmony among religions and ethnicities. - Mkini
