Former premier Najib Abdul Razak has been allowed to head to Masjid Negara to pay his last respects to his predecessor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Najib’s lawyer Shafee Abdullah said the Prison Department had granted permission.
This was relayed in court today where the former premier was supposed to attend his 1MDB corruption trial.
FMT reported that judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah allowed the court to adjourn with the trial to continue tomorrow.
Najib arrived at Masjid Negara at around 10.30am and was under heavy guard.
He was allowed to greet Abdullah's son Kamaluddin to extend his condolences. The former Pekan MP reportedly left around 10 minutes later.
Najib was Abdullah’s deputy prime minister from 2004 to 2009.
He succeeded Abdullah for the top job after the latter came under intense pressure from Umno following BN’s lacklustre performance in the 2008 general election.
Abdullah breathed his last yesterday and will be laid to rest in a state funeral today.
