MACC nabs ex-Dewan Negara deputy speaker, now Bersatu leader

MACC detained Bersatu deputy information chief Ali Mohamad yesterday to facilitate investigations into an alleged bribery case.

According to his lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali, the former Malacca assemblyperson was detained at 6.30pm by a team of anti-graft officers who raided his house in Tangga Batu.

MACC also recorded statements from the politician's wife and children at their office in Malacca before they were released at about 9pm last night.

"So far, we were only informed that he was detained under Section 16 of the MACC Act over an alleged bribery case.

"We are yet to get full details on what the allegation is. We are expecting the investigating officer to provide this soon," Rafique said.

Ali was taken before a magistrate in Malacca this morning for a remand application.

According to the lawyer, the magistrate granted a six-day remand period.

MACC chief Azam Baki when contacted confirmed the arrest, but did not elaborate.

Politically motivated

Around midnight last night, political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, who is also a Bersatu division chief, posted on Facebook about Ali’s arrest.

He claimed the authority’s action against Ali was politically motivated, and allegedly connected to the latter’s tussle with Malacca Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh, who is also the state chief minister.

For the record, Ali is formerly Rauf’s deputy in the state Umno liaison committee. He was the Tangga Batu Umno division chief but lost the seat to Rais Yasin during the Umno party election in 2023.

Ali had served as the Dewan Negara deputy president between December 2020 and May 2023.

In May last year, Umno announced its decision to sack Ali from the party for joining Bersatu. - Mkin
