Penang police confirmed on their official Facebook page that Francis Aruputham, a corporal assigned to the camp commandant’s branch, was pronounced dead at Penang Hospital at 5.12pm today.
Francis suffered serious head injuries after reportedly accidentally shooting himself in the head with his service weapon.
He was in the general intensive care unit after initially being placed in the neurosciences intensive care unit.
Bernama reported that police had recorded a statement from his former wife.
Penang police chief Hamzah Ahmad was quoted as saying it was still too early to conclude the investigation, and further statements were expected to be taken from several other parties to determine the cause of the self-inflicted wound.
He said the standard operating procedures for firearms usage among police officers and personnel were sufficient and did not need tightening despite the incident.
The case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960 for accidental or intentional discharge of a firearm. - FMT
