Teen runs red light, crashes into motorcyclist while fleeing police in Sungai Petani

SUNGAI PETANI: An attempt by a 16-year-old and his pillion rider to evade the police proved costly when their motorcycle ran a red light and crashed into another rider on Friday.

The incident, which occurred at a traffic light junction on Jalan Lencongan Barat here, was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media.

The rider, a school dropout without a licence, and his 18-year-old pillion rider sustained serious injuries to their faces and legs in the 4.10pm incident.

The accident also injured another motorcyclist when the fleeing teens crashed into her.

Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the teenagers were initially stopped by officers from the Kuala Muda Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Division, who were conducting an accident prevention patrol in Sungai Pasir.

"When asked about their driving licence, the rider attempted to flee. Officers gave chase for about a kilometre.

"In their attempt to escape, they ran a red light and crashed into another motorcycle ridden by a female factory worker who was heading towards Padang Temusu," he said in a statement.

Due to the impact, the teenagers' motorcycle was severely damaged in the front, while the factory worker's motorcycle sustained damage to the front-right section.

The 22-year-old factory worker suffered injuries to her right leg.

All three victims received treatment at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving. - NST
