Kitingan mum on rumours of Star splitting from GRS

Parti Solidarity Tanah Airku (Star) president Jefferey Kitingan has declined to comment on a news report that his party intends to split from the governing Sabah coalition, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).

According to news portal Malaysianow, Kitingan was heard in a video allegedly threatening to withdraw his party from the coalition led by Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor.

In the video, Kitingan was reportedly heard saying that his party “will leave GRS, but still be with the government”.

When contacted by Malaysiakini, an aide who spoke on condition of anonymity, conveyed that Kitingan had “no further comments” on the report.

Kitingan is among several Sabah politicians implicated in a mining license corruption scandal, following a series of incriminating videos shared by a source.

Kitingan had since denied allegations that he received RM1.78 million in bribes in connection with the scandal.

However, he admitted to meeting businessperson Albert Tei, a whistleblower charged in court recently, around the same time the video implicating him was taken.

He also blamed a “hidden hand” aiming to destabilise the state government.

More implicated

Last Saturday, Malaysiakini reported that six more Gabungan Rakyat Sabah politicians from Star and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) have been implicated in the corruption scandal that has upended Hajiji’s administration.

A source furnished Malaysiakini with screenshots purportedly taken from video recordings involving the six leaders, purportedly involving a total of RM3.96 million.

Tei was recently charged in court with bribing Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Assistant Minister Andi Suryady Bandy and Sindumin assemblyperson Yusof Yacob to get help with mineral prospecting licences. - Mkini
