'Cheap politics': Selangor DAP Youth pans 'celebration' for Puchong MP

Selangor DAP Youth has criticised its Umno counterparts for what it claimed to be an act of “cheap politics” following the group’s hosting of a “year-end celebration” in front of the Puchong parliamentary service centre.

In a statement today, Selangor DAP Youth said the action, carried out following a remark by Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin, brought no benefit to the public and reflected immature political behaviour.

“The practice of gathering in groups merely to create provocation and sensation is not mature politics.

“Instead, it reveals a failure to argue intellectually and based on facts,” it said.

Yesterday, a delegation of Selangor Umno Youth leaders and about 100 supporters gathered outside Yeo’s service centre to mock the DAP publicity chief over her remarks against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.

The group, led by Selangor Umno Youth chief Imran Tamrin, targeted Yeo’s comments describing Najib’s bid for house arrest hitting a legal brick wall as a cause for celebration.

Imran said Yeo should instead “celebrate” the final guilty verdict against former Tronoh assemblyperson Paul Yong, and the group later raised a banner with a chronology of events which culminated in an Oct 1 verdict dismissing his final appeal in a rape case involving his maid in 2019.

As part of the “celebration”, the Selangor Umno Youth leaders and supporters raised caricatures of Yeo’s face printed with the misspelt word “Biadap”, in reference to biadab, which is Malay for insolent.

There was also a man dressed in a black-and-white prisoner’s outfit, and a Joker mask, said to represent Yong.

Solidarity with Yeo

The Selangor DAP Youth further linked the move to the leadership style of Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, perceived to favour gimmicks and emotional appeals over substantive solutions to people’s issues.

“If a single comment or statement is considered so sensitive that it requires physical pressure and group demonstrations, then Selangor Umno Youth should reflect and reassess the reality of 2022.

“When Najib was imprisoned, there were thousands of reactions and social media posts, including those that were cynical and even celebrated the decision.

“Should all those individuals also be targeted with political gimmicks and public pressure?” it questioned.

In stressing that politics should not be driven through intimidation, provocation, or selective demonstrations, Selangor DAP Youth reiterated its solidarity with Yeo, against “political theatrics”.

Various leaders from Umno, as well as PKR and DAP, have rebuked Yeo over her remarks, which also fuelled calls for BN to withdraw support for the coalition government.
