MACC probes ex-minister over alleged graft worth 'millions'

MACC has launched an investigation into a former minister over allegations of corruption and abuse of power involving projects in the nation’s capital.

While the exact amount involved has yet to be determined, a source from MACC hinted that the value of the alleged misappropriation is estimated to reach “millions of ringgit”.

The investigation, the source added, was initiated after the commission obtained a “fresh intelligence report” despite the incident occurring nearly a decade ago.

“The focus of the investigation is related to the approvals given to several projects in the federal territories during the individual’s tenure.

“Among others, MACC is scrutinising approval of contracts for the construction of giant billboards and the transfer of ownership involving a piece of government land.

“The land was allegedly transferred to a prominent property development company under suspicious circumstances.

“We only received a solid intelligence report at the end of last month, which led to this investigation,” the source told Malaysiakini.

Witnesses to be called soon

The source elaborated that MACC is scrutinising the former minister’s links to the companies that had benefited from the projects.

“MACC is in the phase of collecting relevant documents to complete the case profile before taking further action.

“Several key witnesses, including individuals with direct information, will be called in soon to assist with the investigation,” the source added.

Azam Baki

Meanwhile, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the matter, according to New Straits Times.

“My investigators immediately began probing after we received fresh intelligence.

“We will call several people of interest to facilitate investigations,” Azam added. - Mkini
