Penang Pakatan Harapan has agreed to retain its only BN executive councillor in the state administration.
Chief Minister and Penang Harapan chairperson Chow Kon Yeow said the decision was in line with the Harapan-BN electoral pact forged during the 2023 state election.
State media, Buletin Mutiara, reported him saying that amid political realignments in Johor and Negri Sembilan, Penang Harapan cannot afford to become complacent despite its record in governing the state.
On the possibility of BN forming an electoral pact with Perikatan Nasional in Penang, Chow reiterated that Harapan’s 2023 electoral pact was specifically with BN, adding that Penang must remain a Harapan stronghold.
Chow reportedly said that Penang Harapan would also strengthen cooperation among its component parties, expand its digital presence, counter racial and hate-based narratives with facts, and closely study the results of the Johor and Negeri Sembilan polls, analysing every constituency in Penang ahead of the next general election.
Former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak has cautioned that any political understanding between Umno and PAS that works in Peninsular Malaysia should not automatically be applied to Sabah, which has a distinct political environment.
“One country does not necessarily require one political or electoral formula,” he said in a Facebook statement, stressing that a Malaya-centric political arrangement could backfire if imposed on Sabah.
He said the 2025 Sabah election demonstrated that voters were increasingly influenced by state interests, autonomy, development, and Sabah rights, with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Warisan winning 54 of the 73 state seats between them.
Salleh said Sarawak provided an even stronger example, with Gabungan Parti Sarawak consolidating its position through a distinctly Sarawak-centred political platform, while Umno had never established itself there.
He said Sabah Umno should instead be regarded as a national party that understands Sabah and works closely with local parties, particularly GRS, basing its approach on political stability, development, Sabah rights, and the interests of Sabahans.
The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) said it detained and inspected a container at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor on Aug 7, after receiving intelligence that it was suspected of carrying goods for export to Israel.
In a statement, MCBA said preliminary checks found that the shipment may have breached Item 15 of the Second Schedule of the Customs (Prohibition of Exports) Order 2023, which prohibits the direct or indirect export of goods to Israel in line with Malaysian government policy.
The agency said it will conduct further investigations with relevant authorities to determine the nature, specifications, use, and classification of the goods, including whether they are strategic items regulated under the Strategic Trade Act 2010. - Mkini
