Zulhilmi Ramli said the cheating case involving businessman G Gnanaraja was not part of his investigation into former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng, who is accused of corruption and dishonestly misappropriating state land.
However, lawyer Ramkarpal Singh accused Zulhilmi of “neglecting” his duty by failing to take into account what Zarul had said in the cheating case involving Gnanaraja.Ramkarpal said Zarul gave conflicting statements in the investigations against Lim and Gnanaraja regarding a sum of RM2 million.
He pointed out that while Zarul claimed that RM2 million was given to former prime minister Najib Razak in Gnanaraja’s cheating case, Zarul also claimed the same amount was given to Lim in his corruption case.
“Zarul provided two versions to MACC. Why didn’t you ask Zarul about that?” Ramkarpal said.
Zulhilmi said he had already recorded statements from Zarul and other witnesses as part of his investigation.
Ramkarpal maintained that Zulhilmi had neglected his duty, saying no proper investigation had been conducted into Zarul.
Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin told the lawyer to allow the witness to answer the questions before making remarks about him.
Trial judge Azura Alwi also told Ramkarpal not to keep “changing the question” before the witness had an opportunity to answer.
Lim is accused of using his position as chief minister to solicit a 10% share of profits from the undersea tunnel project, as well as receiving RM3.3 million in bribes from Zarul.
He also faces two charges of dishonestly misappropriating state land worth RM208.7 million.
