Lover held over disposal of baby born to student at her hostel toilet

Dungun police chief Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat said the baby’s mother is believed to have kept the body in her locker before contacting her boyfriend to bury the remains.

A mechanic has been remanded for four days from today to assist investigations into a case involving a 19-year-old female student who concealed the birth of her baby boy born at the toilet of a hostel of an educational institution in Dungun on Sept 9.

Dungun police chief Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat said the remand order was issued by magistrate Ng Yan Ni to enable the case to be investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code, which deals with the concealment of a child’s birth by secretly burying or disposing of the body.

He said the 24-year-old mechanic, from Kuala Terengganu, was believed to be the student’s boyfriend. He was arrested at Jalan Pantai Teluk Lipat, Dungun, at 3pm yesterday.

Nik Halim said the female student was also detained at the Dungun police headquarters at 6pm yesterday but later released on police bail due to health reasons.

He said the student gave birth to the baby in the toilet of the female hostel at about 5pm on Sept 9 without knowing she was pregnant. The baby died soon after being born.

She is suspected to have kept the body in her locker without the knowledge of her roommate and contacted her boyfriend to seek his help in secretly burying the remains. - FMT
