Division committee and '90 branch chiefs' say they will join Wawasan.
The latest defections come a day after Padang Besar Bersatu deputy chief Ramzi Udi and 19 other party leaders and members announced their departure from the party, citing dissatisfaction with its leadership.
In a statement today, Kangar Bersatu deputy chief Faisol Rahman said the group had chosen to leave Bersatu “amicably and with dignity” after a loss of confidence in the party’s central leadership.
He said Bersatu’s direction, organisational management and leadership approach did not meet their expectations as division and branch leaders.
Faisol said the group would join Wawasan because they believed its direction and leadership were more closely aligned with the aspirations and needs of the grassroots.
“We believe the strength of any political party begins with trust between its leadership and the grassroots. When that trust has eroded, we feel the time has come to take a clear stand.
“We are leaving Bersatu because we have lost confidence. We are joining Wawasan because we believe in a new direction,” he said.
Faisol said the defections involved 90 of the 99 Kangar division branch chiefs. He also said the move did not involve any Bersatu MP or assemblyman in Perlis.
He said the Hujong Tanjung branch, headed by Perlis menteri besar Abu Bakar Hamzah, would remain with Bersatu.
The developments follow the appointment of Padang Besar Bersatu chief Izizam Ibrahim as the party’s new Perlis chief.
Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali said the appointment, approved by party president Muhyiddin Yassin, took effect on Sept 3.
Perlis Bersatu was previously led by Abu Bakar, who is also the Kuala Perlis assemblyman.
Abu Bakar resigned from Bersatu’s Supreme Council on July 9. - FMT
