‘Phua Chu Kang’ actors charged over anti-death penalty gathering

“Phua Chu Kang” actors Lim Kay Siu and Neo Swee Lin were among five Singaporeans charged with taking part in a gathering last year in support of abolishing the death penalty.

Lim and Neo were charged with taking part in a public assembly outside the State Courts – a prohibited area – on Feb 3, 2025, CNA reported.

The other three were journalist Kirsten Han, activist Annamalai Kokila Parvathi, and Rocky Howe.

A sixth Singaporean, Ten Leu Jiun, was charged with attending two candlelight vigils at Changi prison in November 2024.

Lim played Frankie Foo, the business rival to the titular character, Phua Chu Kang, while Neo played Phua Ah Ma, Chu Kang’s mother. They could be fined up to S$5,000 if convicted.

The award-winning sitcom, which stars Gurmit Singh, ran for eight seasons.

The cases for all six were adjourned to October. - FMT
