Beyond the 'Dong Zong issue'

The products of the Malaysian educational system have for several batches passed through the conveyor belt. The issue of race relations has become more and more exacerbated, partly as a consequence of the inability of the education policy makers to design peaceful educational settings and peaceable learning environments to allow respect and appreciation for each other’s culture to flourish.
A REPUBLIC OF VIRTUE
Dr Azly Rahman
I read with interest about ongoing governmental discrimination against Chinese schools, as highlighted by Dong Zong.

Why are quality teachers and an abundance of resources still channeled only to Malay-dominated schools? Why are children in Chinese schools criminalised by the ‘sanction on teaching staff” which will ultimately deprive students of a good mother-tongue education?

dong zong chinese school 325 protest 250312What actually is our illness with regard to denial of the students’ right to their own language? Do policy makers actually understand the relationship between culture, cognition, consciousness and citizenship?

What does nationalism mean these days, and how do we understand it vis-a-viz use of language in schools? Whose brand of nationalism is being made dominant and what should an inclusive one look like?

What is the real issue behind the age-old request for the Chinese schools to have more teachers? How are the children criminalised by all this? Where is the peaceful path to this gentle profession called education?

When I think of education, I think of the children first and foremost. I think of each child as a gift brought into this world in all his/her cultural and cognitive complexities and of the pride of the family raising the child independent of what the ‘state’ wants the child to become.

Schooling is a process of mass babysitting in a capitalist state, such that the child will be provided a place for eight hours a days, five days a week, to be taken care of, like in a kibbutz, while the parents go to work, selling their labour to the state.

azlanThe child is supposed to behave and learn new things while the parents are supposed to be obedient and, as good workers, bring profit to the state. The state, through its apparatuses, uses the profits and products of ‘alienated labour’ of  parents/workers and ‘develops’ the country according to what the political and economic elite imagines what ‘development’ means.

The child gets to be socialised to become citizens of the state. The mass baby-sitting agencies called public, private or parochial schools, tended by ‘managers of virtue’ called teachers - and wardens’ in boarding schools.

Their role is to ensure that the child learns to become nationalistic or even ‘patriotic’ in accordance to what this means vis-a-viz state ideology. In Malaysia, the current ideology is perhaps called ‘1Malaysia’.

Polarised education system

Are schools a happy place for the child? How shall the child be moulded? What language will he/she be proficient in? Whose culture will he/she inherit? In Malaysia, will it be the culture of the Malays? Or a hybrid of the Malay-Muslim culture? Who defines what will be it in the best interests of the child?

What actually is Malaysia's philosophy of education in this age and time of growing restlessness demanding for radical change, inclusiveness, linguistic diversity and competency, and the demands of a globalised world?

dong zong chinese school 325 protest 250312Why not let the child be schooled well first in his/her mother-tongue to develop cultural pride, and next let the medium of instruction at the secondary level be in English primarily?

Why not teach even the subject of Islamic Studies and Moral Education in English, and next prepare the child well for tertiary education that is predominantly English-speaking, with courses such as Philosophy, Ethics, and Cultural Studies as compulsory first-year subjects?

Malaysians: Let us not be dishonest, ignorant or hypocritical in the way we design the best cultural and cognitive environment for the child to grow up to become world-wise and productive citizens. As it is now, Malaysia's education system is polarising and inspired by the apartheid system.

NONEPublic discourse is becoming more plagued with calls by this or that racist-fascist groups in defence of the bankrupt and morally and nationally bankrupting ideology of Ketuanan Melayu or ‘pseudo-Malay idiotic pride’ as I would translate it.

Has there been any effort by the Education Ministry to design and implement a curriculum on multicultural education? Has there been an interest in it at all, given the nature of Malaysia’s communal politics that has evolved into the state of ethno-psychopathology bordering on irrationality, greed and massive corruption?

As an educator involved in the teaching of cultural perspectives, philosophy, and education, I’d like to see children in Malaysian schools bring their culture with pride into the classroom, to be shared with others in a deeply engaging creative learning context.

This is so that we bring in what the philosopher Charles Taylor would call the “ethics of authenticity” - of the ethical traditions of culture - into the learning process and not have these young curious cultural minds evolve into become ‘knockers or boosters’ of this or that brand of ultra-ethnocentrism.

Let us see how the Education Ministry will resolve this Dong Zong issue once and for all, before another regime takes this important  task more seriously.

NFC told not to use the law to scare people

PKR feels that the NFCorp by a lodging a police report it is using provisions in the law to protect itself.
PETALING JAYA: PKR today told the troubled National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) to not use provisions in the law to cover up their wrongdoings.
The party’s strategic director, Rafizi Ramli said this in reaction a police report NFCorp made yesterday against Rafizi, PKR women’s chief Zuraidah Kamarudin and party vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar.
NFCorp is alleging that Rafizi had gone against the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (Bafia) when he distributed private and confidential bank account documents to the media during a press conference on March 7.
NFCorp reportedly said, “Documents sighted by NFCorp reveal that the information distributed were internal bank printouts of credit ratings and bank balances, and not the regular statements sent to customers or downloaded from Internet banking”.
During the press conference Rafizi had revealed NFCorp’s modus operandi which was to transfer funds into banks and the company would simply use those funds to get credit facility to buy private properties. Also at the press conference Rafizi had revealed more allegation of abuse of the RM 250 million soft loan given to NFCorp.
Rafizi had shown bank documents revealing that NFCorp had recently used these personal loans to buy eight shop office units in the luxury KL Eco City in the Lembah Pantai constituency. Nurul is the MP for Lembah Pantai.
In a press statement today Rafizi said that he respected NFCorp’s right to take up the matter to the police but warned  them against using provisions of law in NFCorp’s defence.
“While I respect the rights of the senior management of NFCorp and their use of law against us,I also remind NFCorp to not use the provisions of existing laws to intimidate Malaysian citizens who expose fraud  among the leaders and the elite,
“Law in a society is to ensure justice and prevent injustice, not to protect fraud and allow the perpetrator to escape,” he said.
Rafizi added that while he will fully corporate in the investigations over the matter, this will not stop PKR from making more allegations about the National Fedloot Center(NFC) scandal and the NFcorp’s involvement.
He said that should he be charged, he would willingly meet NFCorp in court for “the people’s spirit – who wants the misappropriation within NFCorp to be revealed – must be respected”.
The company is owned and operated by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil’s family.
NFCorp was selected to assist NFC in achieving 40 percent self sufficiency in beef production.
Both Rafizi and Zuraidah have already slapped with a RM 100 million defamation suit by Shahrizat which was filed in January.

Bar Council wants Rela disbanded, police prioritised

The Bar Council has recommended that the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) be dissolved so that its financial resources can be transferred to the police force to strengthen the men in blue.

Bar Council chairperson Lim Chee Wee opined it is timely for the government to reconsider the relevance of Rela after the Emergency Ordinance was repealed in December last year.

NONE“Currently there are three million Rela members out of 27 million Malaysians, which means one out of ten Malaysians (are involved in the corps). The number is just too big,” he told reporters after a forum at the Bar Council headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Lim compounding the issue is the new initiative under the National Key Results Areas (NKRA) to allow Rela members to wear police uniforms with Rela badges.

“Why do we need to enhance Rela’s power when they are not even an enforcing body?

“The ordinary citizens on the street would not be able to differentiate between a real police and a (volunteer) ‘police’ with Rela badge. The policy itself presents more problems than solutions,” he said.

Lim (above) urged the government to dissolve Rela, the Civil Defence Department (JPAM) and Rukun Tetangga (residents’ watch groups) when the legitimacy of these bodies expire in June.

Rela ‘illegal’ after June 30

Under Article 150 of federal constitution, laws which were put in place under the Emergency Ordinance are deemed to cease six months after the ordinance is repealed.

NONEDeputy Home Minister Lee Chee Leong has recently said that a new law governing Rela will be tabled in the next parliament session.

The Bar Council’s human rights committee chairperson Andrew Khoo (left) however warned that the new law must be passed by June 30.

“If the government cannot pass the new law by June 30, Rela will be an illegal body,” he said.

Khoo and Lim both reiterated that instead, priority should be given to the police and that the voluntarily corps should instead be reassigned to community-based patrolling.

The Azan, Quran recital and lectures over loud speakers

  • Firstly and respectfully, I humbly request that only the Muslims place their comments here. I urge the non-Muslims not to respond directly on this post but send me an email privately to share your views. The topic is only dedicated to the Muslims whom I wished to get their views.
  • By now everyone knows where I lived. My corner unit house is merely 80m from the BA mosque and I lived in a terrace house of mixed neighborhood of Muslims and non-Muslims. This is a very quiet neighborhood with reasonably well community engagement. Our issue here is the loudness of the Azan and the recital of Quran over the loud speakers, which has become a bane to many of us. I would say I am the worse affected in view of the location of my house and it has wide sliding door the entire sidewall facing the mosque. I have been engaging the mosque committee privately in the last 1 year on the matter. Many of us felt that the volume is increasing becoming louder to a level that it is not longer comforting to the ear.
  • As matter of principle and as a man who will defend Islam without hesitation, I felt that it is important and Fardu Kifayah that we address this issue of using loud speakers for Azan once and for all. I believe everyone would agree that all Malaysian would not object to the Azan. However the main objection would be on the excessive loudness of Azan and the recital of Quran using the speakers. Who knows whether the next would be having tazkirah (lectures) using the megaphones?
  • Someone claims that by reducing the volume we would be reducing the Syiar of Islam and there is no need for us to bow the Non Muslims demands. I am in the different view where as I would say that we should show that Muslims are level-minded people, easily engaged and fair in making any decisions especially in a plural society.  I believe there are many hadith and verses in the Quran to that effect. By blasting the Azan at such an unreasonable volume, it would make people hatred and stay away from Islam. It will not encourage non-Muslims closer to the religion. In fact we have move to a way that we intentionally cut off the non-Muslim by making so many barriers to even enter the compound of the Mosque.
  • The excessive use and loudness of megaphones are not reasonable. The megaphones are man made. The technology is there for us to hear the Azan in a way that is soothing to the ear. Why can’t we use the technology to our advantage? Why can’t we decentralize the megaphones instead of placing all of it on one minaret? Why can’t we adjust the volume to meet the needs of the community? Why cant we do sound mapping and use the legally approved sound levels for the environment, which is objectively set at a certain decibels as a standard? Why do we have to be confrontational with the neighborhood in listening to Azan? Don’t I have rights as a member of this community?

  • I for one have no objection for a reasonable volume Azan but disagree on the need to recite Quran or having lectures over the megaphones.  I am the face in this battle as the non-Muslims are too scared and the Muslims in my neighborhood do not want to speak up, as they don’t want to label by the mosque members. Two years ago, my text message to a committee over the issue of Azan was spread to the neighborhood with an added phrase; “what kind of Muslim is Dr. Rafick?” It went around and came back to me. Perhaps there are committee members who are interested in my property and is trying to push me to sell indirectly by chasing me out?

Christianizing the Johoreans?

JOHOREANS WAKE UP !! ... why not listen to more talk on the continuity of the message of monotheism, piety, patience, and love, instead of trapped in a nonsense called the "threat of Christianization"? when are we going to learn about peaceful messages and find similarities rather than propagate hate and absurdities? Bankrupt are the politicians .. for they are the warmongers ... blessed are the peacemakers .

Those in Malaysia yelling on the "threat of Christianization," this is what the early Muslims owe the Christians .. and did not Prophet Muhamammad, upon receiving the first revelation of "Iqra .." , was brought by Khadijah to Waraqah ibn Nufail asking the pious and learned Christian man to validate what is being said about the coming of Muhammad in the Bible? Know your history before spreading hatred ... or, are those Muslims spreading hatred in Johor simply in denial of the idea of universal truth ...? Wage peace, not war ... else we'll see more church burning, dragging of cowhead, pig's head thrown into masjids .. all these probably done by well-paid punks and those Mat Rempits used well as Malaysia's newest Hitlerian Youth groups -- ar

earth calling Najib, come in please....over !

I have had close-up conversations photo-shoots with Tok Guru and Hadi, and never felt threatened by their responses regarding Islamic religious views and unity. In fact the PAS tag-line "PAS For All" is and definitely more sincere and a safer bet compared to this 2-faced evil within us known as UMNO ! (read here ) And you were foolish enough to have thought all this while that PAS was the threat to your religious views and freedom !

But then again you are but a mere mortal who'll swallow any crap that came out of the msm, right ? Everything you read or heard about PAS in your daily newspapers and the television for decades were just plain and systematic BN propaganda ala"Goebbels" demonising an opposition party that was founded on Islamic principles. Is there anything wrong with that ?

And that
"Islamic" party still went ahead with non-Islamic parties to form a coalition to challenge the BN. Call it a "marriage of convenience " or whatever you like, but we the thinking rakyat have no fear of the Opposition together with the PR coming to power in Putrajaya. PAS has never once said they will turn Muslims against Christians or Chinese or Hindus nor have they ever said that they will rule this country as an Islamic country save for a few over zealous bigots within who have been dealt with severely or even sacked.

For those how have now conveniently forgotten, let me remind you, it was that grand-master of corruption and racism, and now irrelevant Tun Mahathir, who went on national and global tv to announce that Malaysia WAS indeed an Islamic country and not a secular one...remember ?

And Najib's 1Malaysia unity call sinks even lower into the depths of our social cesspool while he's holding his elegant silence without comments regarding this much talked about
"Christian threat" controversy in Johor. And nothing is left for guessing who the real bigots are in this here country of ours. And you still want to vote them into power the next time your elect your government ?

This is only a religious issue that affects you and me so don't let me start on other forms of mega crony corruption, police brutality, governmental irregularities, mat rempits, thuggish ministers, UMNO arrogance, Lynas and racist issues in Malaysia yet. I'd welcome PAS anytime to run my country but of course with the blessing of the PR coalition !

Have a "thinking" weekend folks !

p.s. have you checked your voter and voting station registration info recently ? Or are you very certain nothing has changed since and if you had, last voted ? Are you even registered as a voter yet but you are above age 21 now and not excerising your constitutional responsibility, ? You still have until 5.30pm TODAY to register. So hurry now to the nearest Post Office, you moron, you !
Otherwise save your family's future and your country and be a responsible citizen.
So for God's sake....click here again please and double-check !

Losing the Malay vote: Comparison with Anwar is Najib's greatest fear

Losing the Malay vote: Comparison with Anwar is Najib's greatest fear
Embattled Prime Minister Najib Razak is under attack from all fronts. Not only is the most powerful 'warlord' in Umno - former premier Mahathir Mohamad - losing confidence in him to win the 13th general election, even the smaller chieftains as well as the disgraced ones such as former Selangor chief minister Khir Toyo are publicly giving their two cents worth on how to stave off Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and his Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
For Najib - a clumsy and awkward politician - the solution is simple. Bombard Anwar. It does not seem to have occurred to him that Pakatan has grown beyond what it was when it went into the 2008 general elections - a loose pact of three parties, namely PKR, PAS and DAP. Be that as it may, Najib's dependence on media sensationalism and a shady group of bought-over politicians has reaped some reward for the Pakatan, in that the tactic has boomeranged and whittled down Najib's credibility even more.
Malaysians would choose Anwar
When Najib first took over as prime minister in 2009 and promised reforms, Malaysians were optimistic and gave him a chance. But nearly 4 years have passed, and Najib has been proven to be a fraud - espousing lofty ideals in public but doing the opposite in reality. In the end, he is seen as little more than just another weak Umno leader who needs to rely on race and religion to stir up support for himself.
On this basis, it is no wonder that try as he will, the near nightly TV appearances by dubious people such Senator S Nallakauppan, Senator Ezam Mohd Nor, Ummi Hafilda and former MIC Youth leader N Gobalakrishnan have only sparked cynicism about his caliber as a prime minister. Nonetheless, having paid out hefty fees, plus handing out several Senatorships, Najib feels it is 'safer' to continue with his "sex, sex, sex" campaign against Anwar. After all, it worked for Mahathir, so why not for him? But it only 'worked' for Mahathir because he threw Anwar into jail. Can Najib do the same to Anwar today? Will the political consequences be the same?
Conveniently, Najib also seems to have forgotten that the people are able to think for themselves or that they might wonder why is he pushing such an incredulous campaign? Why doesn't he just take on Anwar in the public debate that the Opposition Leader has challenged him to over and over again?
The answers are obvious, of course. Najib could never take on Anwar and it is not just to do with oratorical skills. A debate would spark the very comparison that he is trying to avoid at all costs. Najib knows he is no match for the gifted Anwar. Even Mahathir picked Anwar over Najib to be his deputy prime minister when Anwar was still in Umno.
Therefore, to allow Malaysians who will surely glue themselves to the TV for such a debate, and allow them - especially the Malays - the opportunity to evaluate and - horrors of horror - compare the two men, Najib might as well throw in the towel straightaway.
Things are not working out for Najib
At 58, Najib is in an awkward position due mainly to his own inability to lead and to his indecisive character. This is why wife Rosmah Mansor has been so influential compared to the other wives of the previous premiers. As PKR Women's chief Zuraida Kamaruddin has pointed out, if Najib cannot control his wife - whose wild spending sprees have disturbed the man in the street all the way up to Parliament - how can he be expected to control the nation.
Until now, he has failed to utter a squeak in response to the invitation from WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to team up with fugitive blogger Raja Petra and take on Anwar in a moderated debate. By stark comparison, Anwar agreed without fuss despite the unfairness of having to take on Najib and Raja Petra in a two-versus-one.
Perhaps, Najib expected Anwar to be as afraid as he is and to rebuff Assange. After all, two versus one is hardly fair. But Anwar upped the ante when he straightaway said yes, arguing that paramount was to give the people a chance to assess and evaluate for themselves the state of their nation and to decide who could better run their nation - Pakatan or BN?
So to continue to bombard Anwar on the "sex, sex, sex" theme is 'safer', Najib reckons. There are many reasons for him and his camp to believe they are on the right track. One factor is desperation.
Back to the wall
Najib is himself in a very vulnerable position right now, because so many issues and scandals are coming together at him, all at the same time. He simply can't cope. Hence, the frequent overseas trips. Each time, the cabin door of the government's plush jet closes, Najib heaves a sigh of relief and wipes his sweaty brow.
Everyone and everything seems to be closing in on him and he has no answers. No even as to when the 13th general election will be held. Initially the Opposition was accused of trying to rush GE-13, but why would they when the electoral reforms they have been demanding are nowhere ready?
No, the ones piling pressure on Najib to announce the GE-13 date are the Umno warlords themselves. The big ones like Mahathir and Daim can wait. Like the Opposition, they want to win and if it takes another year when the BN's mandate officially expires in March 2013, so be it. But tell that to the smaller warlords, who can hardly wait to get their hands on the funds that Najib will allocate to each division to get their machinery ready for polls. These guys are baying like werewolves for the money, and in Umno tradition, one can safely expect that 90% will be siphoned over to their own accounts. Yes, the majority of Umno warlords want their 'ringgit' and now!
Malaysians dread another 5 years under Najib and Rosmah
As for Najib and Rosmah, they would prefer to forever hold on to Putrajaya, the official Seri Perdana residence, the overseas trips on taxpayers' expense, the army of flunkies at their beck and call and so forth. In fact, their ideal would be - no general election at all, period!
But for the people, it is clear their patience has run out. The latest Christianization threat failed to stir the ruckus that similar episodes in the past had. This time, the Christians were not shy to lash out and without pulling punches. However, the rest of Malaysia watched with a weary eye.
Uppermost on their minds were the thoughts that if Najib was to be re-elected, they would have to live with another 5 years of such time-wasting rule. Can they bear another 5 years of Najib and Rosmah, another 5 years of manipulation and backseat driving by Mahathir and Daim, another 5 years of corruption and illicit outflows?
This is what Najib should face up to. These are the questions that are running through the people minds. But he does not feel the pulse of the nation. He never has.
Recent flops
Look at the Felda Global Ventures Holdings listing he is hammering through in June. It is unpopular to a large number of the Felda settlers but Najib only chooses to hear the calls of support from those who want it.
Same goes for the MAS-AirAsia share swap deal, which was condemned and heavily protested by MAS staff. Did Najib listen? But now that the national carrier has posted even worst results after the swap, he is trying to cajole the MAS staff, a large proportion of whom are Malays and may vote for the Pakatan out of disgust if he doesn't take notice of their complaints. But just like everybody else in Malaysia, MAS staff will soon find out that Najib doesn't mean what he says. The PM only intends to cluck his tongue and express some sympathy but until the deal is reversed, MAS staff should not hold their breath.
Another big flop was the My First House scheme that Najib was pinning his hopes on to win the votes of the young professionals, who had suddenly found themselves unable to buy property due to runaway prices that he - as Finance minister - failed to do anything about or to try and control. It was only last week that the central Bank Negara finally announced measures to release the pressure valve in the property market by making it tougher to borrow and speculate on real estate prices.
So, no, Najib did nothing to redeem himself as Finance minister. If he had, he could still have some legacy. But the economy was mostly stagnant to slowing during the past 4 years, and moving on auto-pilot. The gears have now shifted up a notch for a major slowdown as past warnings of a global squeeze start to filter into the local economy. With the Opposition hyperactive and not missing anything, Najib is no longer able to plunder from the cash-rich Employee Provident Fund as his predecessors used to. This means Umno will no longer be able to pass the buck from the left hand to the right hand and then pretend that the country has progressed when the movement was merely lateral and not forward at all.
Hence, sensationalism and "sex, sex, sex" to divert the Malays
So, no wonder Najib needs "sex, sex, sex" against Anwar. He has to use sensationalism to capture the Malays' interest, like the poverty-stricken in India rely on Bollywood for respite against their harsh daily lives.
Malaysians and Christians must beware and brace for new onslaughts from the likes of extremist groups Perkasa and Hasan Ali's Jati. In fact, on Monday, Hasan will finally be revealing a much-awaited video, which he claims proves that Christians are going all out to convert Muslims in Malaysia.
On the racial front, education is likely to be used as another tool of diversion to get the Malays upset and fearful of the Chinese. The May 13, 1969 racial riots will again be used to frighten the Chinese into submission and it is no accident that Najib planned the Umno 66th anniversary celebration to end on May 13, where he is expected to make a 'special' speech.
To Najib, it is a matter of life and death to keep knocking down Anwar. Why? He cannot afford to allow the Malays to focus on the reality and come to the realization that Anwar is really one of the most talented Malay leaders of recent times. There is a huge difference in their political styles, culture, education and economic programs.
In economics, Najib goes for the alphabet soup programs of GTP, ETP, EPP and so on. Anwar, voted best Finance minister by an international magazine, before Mahathir jailed him has stuck to his guns. It is simple for the 64-year-old Anwar. Just stick to priority for the prior, distribution of wealth and goodies on the basis of needs, keep the country open and make sure Malaysia is cleanly and transparently administered. The rest will fall in. Ii does appear simplistic compared to Najib's glitzy acronyms. But as economist point out, the essentials must be put in place first and foremost.
Malays already wising up
Can Najib and Umno ever afford to stop smearing Anwar? Already the Malays - the core electorate - are starting to compare Anwar with Najib, Umno with Pakatan. Indeed, it is very easy for the Malays to swing to Anwar's side. He used to be the darling of their community until Mahathir hatched the Sodomy I conspiracy against him. Even then, Mahathir had to resign and Umno was split down the line.
After Anwar was acquitted and decided to return to active politics, Najib knew he had to keep drumming up sexual accusations against Anwar to keep the seeds of doubts alive. Hence, Nalla, Ezam, Ummi and not to mention the Datuk T trio. But Najib is foolish. Or maybe he just doesn't wish to admit that his plan - his one and only remaining bullet - is not working. Look at the Datuk T sex video which was played out daily in the mainstream newspapers and on TV. What did it do for Najib except consolidate the image that he and Umno know nothing but "sex, sex, sex".
If Najib is smart, he would notice the cheer that was raised all around the nation and the world when Anwar was found not guilty of Sodomy II. And be afraid, very afraid.
Najib is the proverbial boy who cried wolf. From Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the Sodomy II complainant, to the Datuk T trio and thence to the Nalla-Ezam-Ummi group, his gutter strategies have failed and will continue to backfire - eating away at his own credibility. The good thing for Anwar and the Pakatan is that Najib is too foolish to even realize it.
