Hisham: Cops probing Anwar's 'terror links'

Although the home minister has yet to read the original report, he has ordered the authorities to probe Anwar Ibrahim's 'terror links'.

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said that he has issued an order for the police to investigate PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's alleged links with international terrorists.

He claims that a report by CNN had implicated Anwar in having links with terrorist groups. He however admits that he had yet to read the report.

NONE"It got nothing to do with (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak). It is just an CNN report linking him (Anwar) to a terrorist organisation.

"I have asked the terrorist taskforce and I have asked the Special Branch, and they are linking up with the Saudi's intelligence to find out to what extent is Anwar Ibrahim linked to this terrorist group.

"This is not a political issue. This is a security issue... like it or not, we must take this seriously," said Hishammuddin.

Speaking to reporters at Felda Chemplak after Friday prayers, Hishammuddin was also asked if Anwar would be called in for questioning.

"I don't know. You have to ask the police," replied Hishammuddin.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin declined to comment on the matter while campaigning at the Tenang by-election.

"I cannot verify what CNN said," he said.

Anwar cleared

According to CNN, it has sighted a report of a secret Saudi Arabian probe into complaints by Najib that Saudi personalities were funding Anwar.

The CNN report said that the probe found no such evidence.

The same report, however, claims that the Saudi's uncovered that millions of dollars of Saudi money had been funnelled to leading Islamist politicians and foreign-based political activists.

"It also found that al-Qaeda and the Taliban were still able to use Saudi Arabia for fund-raising, despite numerous measures to choke off those sources of cash."

Among others, the report claims that the Muslim Brotherhood political movement had been instrumental in such fundings and had "occasionally" provided funds to feared terror group al-Qaeda.
