Bekir tipped to replace brother in Kota Samarahan

Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib is tipped to replace his younger brother, Kota Samarahan MP Sulaiman Taib, who is expected to be dropped from the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) line-up in the coming general election.

Mahmud, who is also Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) deputy chairman, said his father, Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is also PBB president, already had a candidate in mind but had yet to reveal the identity.

NONE"Yes, I am always interested in politics but the chief minister has not indicated anything to me yet," he told reporters at Abdul Taib's Hari Raya open house in the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) in Kuching today.

Asked if he was ready to take up the challenge, Mahmud said, he had been a member of PBB Kuching branch since he was 19.

Last week, PBB senior vice-president Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said Sulaiman would be among several members of parliament from the backbone of the state BN coalition, who would not be contesting.

He had said Sulaiman, who was fielded in Kota Samarahan in the 12th general election in 2008 to replace Abdul Taib, had indicated that he would not be seeking re-election.

Sarawak BN election machinery is ready

Earlier, when approached by reporters, Abdul Taib said the state BN, which would follow whatever decision taken at the federal level to hold the polls, would do its best to deliver what it could from Sarawak.

As Sarawak had only faced the state election in April 16, this year, he said the BN election machinery was ready to be re-activated any time.

In the last general election, Sarawak BN won 30 of the 31 seats at stake.

However, Richard Wong Ho Leng of the DAP wrested Sibu from the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) in a by-election last year, bringing a total of 29 parliamentary seats in BN's hands, with PBB having 14 seats, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) (six), SUPP (five) and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) (four).
