Cops too trigger-happy after barricades breached

VOXPOP 'The police appeared to be itching to inflict pain and suffering on the peaceful protestors who meant nobody any harm.'

'Breaching of barricades didn't violate court order'

vox populi small thumbnailKairos: Let's all go by the book. The breaching the barricades (outside the off-limits zone) was not against the law. So firing the guns and water cannons at that moment was not lawful.

Also, looking at the videos and pictures, it appears that the police manning the barricades already know that the guns and water cannons will be fired soon because they all ran and retreated backwards so that they are not in the line of fire.

azlanSomebody must have given the police the signal to retreat. The police appeared to be itching to inflict pain and suffering on the peaceful protestors who meant nobody any harm. What kind of a police force is this?

Vgeorgemy: We are vindicated. Right from the beginning we took the stand that the police have no right to stop the rakyat in the areas surrounding Dataran Merdeka. Let see what the attorney-general (AG) says.

Tidakboleh: They only know how to unleash their lung-choking and eye-smarting tear gas and chemically-laced water cannons against the innocent rakyat.

They do not know how to use their brains to make sure they do not to overstep their right. Serves them right.
DAP: Najib must apologise for police brutality

Anak, Bangsa, Malaysia: The riot was not by the demonstrators, but by the police. I myself watched five or even more police officers beating up one individual, and another, for taking photos of the incident.

The home minister said it was SOP (standard operating procedure). I really can't believe he could say something like that. He now must resign, more so when the IGP (inspector-general of police) hasdenied it.

Najib, for saying that the police were the victims, must also resign. The PM and the home minister are both unfit to hold office. They have brought shame to this country.

Kairos: In one stroke, the BN government has wiped out any pro-government sentiments left in middle Malaysia.

A large majority of the public who marched at Bersih 3.0 were ordinary middle-class citizens who are peace-loving and law-abiding. They were there because they want free and fair elections.

Instead of affirming their righteous and just cause, the government sent thugs in police uniforms to beat up innocent people, fire tear gas and water cannons at them, in the worst case of police brutality the nation has ever seen.

To cap it all, the media was intimidated and roughed up when they recorded the ugly scenes of bullying. The presence of international observers was ignored.

What really freaked me out is that when ordinary harmless citizens are whacked and walloped, the PM and his chosen cabinet are silent.

Conclusion - the present government has disqualified itself and lost its credibility to govern.

FellowMalaysian: To atone for the unpardonable injustice and flagrant disregard of law and order, the police must apologise to last Saturday's innocent victims such as the bystanders who were hit be the police car, the lawyers and journalists and cameramen covering the scenes.

Gggg: I believe there must be something important buried in the Dataran Merdeka - otherwise there is no logic in protecting an empty field with such brutality.

Malaysiakini protests violence against journalists

Don't Play-Play: Malaysiakini will be much respected if it does not spin and be biased in its reports.

Publishing reports from Bernama in your portal is not enough to show that you are fair. Most important is that reports that you churn out must not be seen to mostly supports the opposition.

As it is, the flair of writing in 90 percent of your reports are much inclined towards the opposition.

Nambikai: Don't Play-Play, I am glad you feel this way. Your advice should be firstly directed to the mainstream media (MSM) such asNew Straits TimesBernamaThe StarUtusan Malaysia, etc.
RR: We cannot blame the lower rank men in the forces. They take orders from the top brass who needs enlightenment for rational and ethical thinking.

The police or the armed forces are for the protection and defence of the people and country - not the government of the day, whether run by BN or Pakatan Rakyat.

These two forces should not aid and abet any wrongdoing of the government of the day.

Ferdtan: What happened during the Bersih 3.0 and the protest organised by Malaysiakini against violence against media is a reversal of roles - for a change. The people who record news become the news.

Human Being: Well done, Malaysiakini. I am now wearing the black 2009 Malaysiakini 10th anniversary T-shirt.
The size is a little bit too small for me, but to show support is better than comfort. - Malaysiakini
