DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang has urged prime minister Najib Razak to give his assurance that he would not call the 13th general election before the ongoing Royal Commission of Inquiry into illegal immigrants in Sabah completed its task.
“I challenge Najib to assure the people of Sabah that he will not call for the next general election until the RCI on Illegal Immigrants in Sabah has completed its work,” said Lim.
Najib had earlier hinted that he would call for elections this November.
But Lim predicted that Najib might opt to not wait for the Commission's report "to avoid the public spotlight on the many problems" it would unveil including "strong and indisputable evidence that a significant number of illegal immigrants have been included in the electoral roll".
He also compared the delay in in establishing the RCI to the Commission of Enquiry for North Borneo and Sarawak, or the Cobbold Commission, which took only took five months to complete in 1962.
“It is ironic that the Najib premiership appears to be more inefficient and incompetent compared to the governance of 50 years ago in 1962 as demonstrated by the Cobbold Commission who were operating in a time without the convenience of modern technology,” he chided, adding that Najib had taken six months to announce members of the RCI and its terms of reference.
“No sign political will to resolve issue 'once and 4 all' with RCIII still in sleep mode after 7 months,” Lim quipped on Twitter during his visit to Tenom, Sabah.
