The people of Lawas are concerned that too many students and civil servants have gone bankrupt after succumbing to the lure of online gambling.
KUCHING: Online gambling is overtaking Lawas with even its students and civil servants going bankrupt as a result of it.
And the people of Lawas are very concerned as this form gambling is still gaining popularity.
Ba’Kelalan state assemblyman Baru Bian said the situation is not confined to Lawas alone but is affecting the whole of Sarawak as well.
Baru, who is also the Sarawak PKR chairman said: “I remember raising the issue of civil servants going bankrupt. But, now the people of Lawas are worried because students are involved and illegal dens are mushrooming in residential areas.
“I was told Lawas has more than 30 illegal online gambling places,” said Baru.
He also said the people in Lawas had asked the police to raid the suspected gambling centres, “Yet the police have not acted. Sarawak PKR brought this up in the state assembly too. We remember, at least three assemblymen have raised this matter.
According to Baru, so far the owners of the centres are still unknown.
