SHOCKING BN FAILURE: 60% of DBKL civil servants earning below poverty line

SHOCKING BN FAILURE: 60% of DBKL civil servants earning below poverty line
KUALA LUMPUR - About 60% of the 10,000 civil servants working in Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) are earning below the urban poverty line, Federal Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said.
Tengku Adnan said more than 4,000 DBKL workers do not have their own residences and are either renting rooms in the city or are still living with their parents.
"A lot of them are earning about RM2,400 or RM2,500, they cannot survive without working overtime and we are trying to solve that problem.
To address the problem, he said the government is working to develop affordable housing projects which will be sold to DBKL personnel at much lower prices.
The first among such projects is a joint venture between DBKL and Syarikat Warisan Tradisi Sdn Bhd to construct two blocks containing 288 units at Batu 2 1/2, Jalan Cheras.
Tengku Adnan said one of the blocks containing 144 units have already been completed, with the first offer letters being distributed to 121 DBKL personnel today.
The units are valued at RM235,000 for 750 square feet and RM239,000 for 770 square feet each, which will be sold at RM150,000 and RM155,000 respectively to DBKL personnel.
Tengku Adnan said people from all religions will be duly accommodated in the development as shrines or houses of worship will be included there.
He added that those who bought the units are to stay in it or to pass it on to family members, and profit making activities such as selling or leasing out the units are not allowed.
Meanwhile, he said the government is discussing plans with DBKL to further develop housing projects for other civil servants such as police officers and military personnel.
"They are civil servants, yes, but they are also citizens, and we must take care of our own people," he said.
Tengku Adnan said the move will also allow police officers and military personnel to better interact with residents and understand the issues faced by the community. -Sundaily
