BUDGET 2024 | The scope of tax relief for medical expenses will be expanded under the Budget 2024 proposal tabled at the Dewan Rakyat today.
The proposal calls for tax relief of up to RM1,000 for individual income taxpayers, to cover their dental examination and treatment expenses from dental practitioners registered with the Malaysian Dental Council.
The proposal states that this is to “support the National Dental Health Policy in promoting dental care among the rakyat”.
Meanwhile, to promote taxpayers’ awareness of their parent’s health and promote healthy lifestyles, the proposal also calls for the scope of tax relief for medical expenses to be expanded to include full medical examinations for the taxpayers’ parents.
This is for up to RM1,000.
If approved by Parliament, both reliefs are to come into effect for the 2024 assessment year.
Currently, under the 2023 assessment year, individual income taxpayers may claim relief for medical expenses for serious illnesses, fertility treatment, vaccination (up to RM1,000), parents’ treatment in clinics, hospitals or nursing homes, and parents’ dental treatment, and more.
The limit for tax relief for all medical expenses remains at RM10,000. - Mkini
