Kedah PAS threatens legal action over rice hoarding accusations

Kedah PAS has warned against accusing the party of colluding with rice millers to ‘hoard’ rice, or risk legal action.

Its commissioner Ahmad Yahaya said the matter was already explained by Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor yesterday.

“The responsibility of ensuring rice supplies lies with the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry.

“PAS Kedah has never been involved in, nor given orders to any quarters, to conduct ‘hoarding’ activities that impact the country’s food security,” Ahmad (above) said in a statement today.

He was responding to claims on social media that Kedah PAS was in cahoots with cartels to hoard rice, thus leading to a shortage of the staple food.

Some even alleged that the Islamist party received sponsorships from rice millers in the state to fund their activities.

This is after MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki revealed that five rice mills in Kedah were raided due to alleged corruption.

Sanusi earlier brushed off claims that the state government or its agencies had a part in the rice supply scandal.

The PAS leader gave 24 hours to those who made the claims to withdraw them or face legal action.

Elaborating, Ahmad said the state PAS chapter ‘admired’ Sanusi’s boldness in battling rice cartels.

“Kedah PAS regrets the irresponsible act of implicating us in this issue. Are they trying to divert attention from the failure of the minister (Mohamad Sabu) in handling this crisis?

“Kedah PAS gives 24 hours to whoever linked us to the issue. If they do not apologise and withdraw their statements, just wait for the legal action,” said Ahmad. - Mkini
