KUALA LUMPUR: Police rescued an Indonesian man, 28, and a Myanmar woman, 22, believed to be victims of labour exploitation at a recycling factory in Rawang, Selangor.
Police found the pair when the premises were raided yesterday evening, said Soffian Santong, an assistant director of Bukit Aman’s anti-trafficking unit.
Also detained were a man and woman from China who worked as the factory’s supervisor and assistant supervisor, and 15 undocumented migrants from Myanmar, China, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
The factory in the Kundang industrial area is believed to have been operating illegally for the past year.
“During the raid, the Myanmar woman was found in a room on the first floor of the factory crying in fear. Preliminary investigations found that the victim was not allowed to leave and had not been paid for more than four months,” he said in a statement today.
The Indonesian man had been working there for about a year and had lost a finger on his right hand due to a work-related accident.
The employer failed to provide proper treatment, Soffian said.
He said the two victims are believed to have been trafficked based on the fact that they had been working long hours and without pay for months, as well as being neglected by their employer. - FMT
