83 skeletal remains found in Sibu drain - report

Eighty-three skeletal remains have reportedly been found in a drain at a residential area in Sibu, Sarawak.

According to the New Straits Times, the discovery was made when a contract worker from the Sibu Municipal Council stumbled upon a human skull, believed to be that of an adult, while cleaning the drain at Jalan Bukit Assek on Monday.

A team comprising the police, forensics experts and doctors from Sibu Hospital, were deployed to the scene yesterday, which led to the discovery of the 83 remains.

“The team, which searched the area from 8.30am until 4pm, found 83 skeletal remains. Further investigation over the matter is ongoing,” the daily quoted Sibu district police chief Zulkipli Suhaili as saying today.

He reportedly told the English-language daily that DNA samples had been collected and sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis, but the identities of the deceased have yet to be ascertained. - Mkini
