Activists, civil society organisations (CSO), student groups, and the youth wings of various political parties - including PAS and DAP - will be joining hands tomorrow night for what they plan to be a six-day “blockade” of the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
This is in response to the US vetoing efforts by the UN to push for a ceasefire in Gaza amid a continued assault by Israel.
“This action will be held peacefully. We will open tents and stay in the tents throughout the picket, besides holding solidarity events each night and erecting flags and symbols of the Palestinian struggle.
“We also plan for a mega rally to be held as the grand finale on Dec 31,” the collective group - dubbed Sekretariat Solidariti Palestin - said in a statement today.
The “blockade” will begin on Tuesday night, with the demonstrators set to assemble at around 10pm.
The statement lists 25 CSOs, 14 student groups, and nine political parties as being in support of the planned protest.
Among them include the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (Mapim), Sisters in Islam (SIS), Bersih, the Malaysian Punjabi Youth Movement, the various university wings of political parties, Muda, PSM, Pejuang, and the youth wings of PAS, PKR, Amanah, Bersatu, and DAP.
In the statement, the secretariat said their demands include calling for an end to the indiscriminate killing of Palestinians, especially women and children; an unconditional ceasefire and end to genocide; a stop to fighting to address civilian needs for aid or shelter; and recognition of Palestinians’ rights to a sovereign nation.
Earlier this month, the US vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
Last week, it threatened to veto another draft resolution, which forced the security council to water down the resolution’s language calling for “urgent action” to step up humanitarian aid instead of a “ceasefire”.
The US then agreed not to veto the amended resolution and abstained from the vote, with the resolution passing on Friday.
Over 20,000 people have been killed in Gaza by Israeli retaliation against an attack by Hamas on Oct 7.
Meanwhile, Wangsa Maju district police chief Ashari Abu Samah said police have not received any application from the rally organisers.
“Police will take security measures to prevent any untoward incidents.
