After sarong incident, council tells guards to treat all with courtesy

A widely-shared video shows a man being told to put on a sarong before entering the Kuala Selangor municipal council.

PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Selangor municipal council has instructed its Rela guards to treat all visitors to the council premises with courtesy, according to its president Hanafe Basir.

Responding to criticism after a man in shorts was forced to wear a sarong before entering the council premises, Hanafe said an internal investigation would be carried out to determine what happened.

He said the dress code should not be an issue as the public were well aware of it. “The dress code for visitors has been in force for ages, and a copy of the code was also displayed at the entrance,” Malaysiakini quoted Hanafe as saying.

The dress code at government premises was also in line with the Rukun Negara, he said.

Yesterday, Selangor state executive councillor Ng Suee Lim, who heads the local government committee, said the sarong incident should not have taken place in a multicultural state.

He told FMT: “I have instructed the council to stop this. This should not have happened. These are ratepayers.” - FMT
