BUTTERWORTH: A man was detained by police after he was rescued by the public while attempting to jump off the Penang Bridge shortly after hacking a woman this morning.
Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Asri Shafie said the suspect, in his 20s, is being treated at a nearby hospital after the bridge leaping incident.
He said that at about 11.10am today, police received information from a man, alerting them to an incident where a man had hacked a woman behind her neck using a parang at Jalan Raja Uda here.
He added that the victim was taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11.58am.
"The closed circuit television (CCTV) footage near the scene captured the gruesome act, providing crucial evidence for the case.
"The victim's body has been sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital forensic unit for a post-mortem examination, revealing stab wounds behind her neck and left shoulder," he said today.
Following the attack, the suspect attempted to leap off the Penang Bridge, but alert members of the public intervened and rescued him.
Asri said the man is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital and in police custody.
"We urge those with information to contact the investigating officer Assistant Superintendent Nasrina Darus, at 04-576 2222 (ext: 2275) or any of the police stations to assist in the investigation," he added.
The case is probed for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. - NST
