Ex-Abim president Faisal elected Bersih chairman

Former Abim president Faisal Abdul Aziz replaces Thomas Fann, who resigned as Bersih chairman last month.

PETALING JAYA: Former Abim president Faisal Abdul Aziz has been elected as Bersih chairman to replace Thomas Fann, who resigned last month.

Faisal achieved a slim victory over Gopalan K Papachan, a former secretary-general of the Malaysian Workers Party, which later became Amanah.

Faisal garnered 23 votes to win by one vote over Gopalan. He will serve as the Bersih chief until 2025.

Bersih’s election committee said the polling was done online with representatives of 45 out of 61 NGOs in the Bersih coalition casting their ballots.

“The process was observed by five observers of endorsing NGOs who were physically present. For full transparency, the counting process was also live-streamed online via Zoom for endorsing NGOs to observe,” it said in a statement.

Faisal, who has a law degree, was Bersih’s deputy chairman from 2018 to 2022. He was president of Abim, the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement, from 2019 to 2023.

Faisal takes over as Bersih chairman from Fann, who resigned from the post last month shortly after being re-elected uncontested. He said the election of four people from a rival faction into senior committee positions was a sign that his vision and direction for Bersih had been rejected. - FMT
