Former Bar Council president Sulaiman dies

Former Bar Council president Sulaiman Abdullah passed away on Monday evening at age 77.

His son, actor and playwright Huzir Sulaiman, confirmed the death in a brief message, saying that despite his father’s many health challenges, his sharp mind and dry wit remained unaffected until the end.

Huzir added that his father had continued to represent clients and serve on various committees and advisory panels.

Sulaiman was formerly the Malaysian Bar secretary (1993-1995) and also its president (2000-2001).

Throughout his career, Sulaiman was involved in prominent cases including the corruption and sodomy trials of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s corruption case and the Perak constitutional crisis following the removal of former menteri besar Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin.

Anwar expressed sadness over hearing the news of Sulaiman’s death.

"He was not only a lawyer, but also a close friend who was with me and my family in the dark and bitter years.

"His conviction and conscience that are firm to the principles of justice and human rights cannot be denied by anyone.

"I was very affected when I received this news while still in Tokyo for a work trip," he posted on X.

Sulaiman’s death comes two years after the passing of his wife, former Suhakam commissioner Mehrun Siraj who died on June 29, 2021.

In recent years his older brothers, former Malaysian Airlines chairperson GK Rama Iyer and former Penang Free School headmaster G Krishna Iyer, also passed away.- Mkini
