Federal Territories (FT) PAS Youth has lodged a police report against DAP's Tan Kok Wai over the latter's proposal to revive the local council election.
Its chief Azmer Syazwan Ahmad Suparmin claimed that Tan's suggestion has sparked racial tensions among the public.
"His statement has sparked the ire of many. There are a lot of arguments and debates on social media.
"This had led to disharmony among the people and has become a phenomenon," he told reporters today.
Azmer (above, right) lodged the police report earlier in the evening at the Dang Wangi district police station.
He said PAS has been consistent in its stance against conducting a local council election.
He said the exception, however, is if the races of voters are standardised across all Parliament seats in the federal territory.
"PAS has been consistent against having a local council election in the federal territories.
"Although it can be said that there is a Malay majority in the federal territories, some Parliament seats such as Kepong and Seputeh have different races.
"With different races, we worry about having a local council election as it leads to the emergence of racial issues," he said.
The last time Malaysia held a local council election was in 1963. The next round, which was supposed to be held the following year, was suspended.
The temporary suspension became permanent in 1976 when Parliament passed the Local Government Act resulting in the abolishment of the local government election altogether and only provided for the appointment of local councillors.
Those against reviving the local council election include Umno, Bersatu, and PAS.
The argument has mainly been racially motivated, with critics claiming that Malays would lose power in urban areas due to "DAP dominance". - Mkini
