Madani govt holding strong with 'concrete roof', no conflicts among parties: PM

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has refuted claims that there will be attempts to topple the coalition government.

Anwar asserted that the cooperation among component parties in the Madani government is strong, likening it to a “concrete roof”.

Therefore, he said it is difficult for any quarters to try and “tebuk atap” (pierce the roof), which is a term often used to describe a change of government through political coups.

“(In fact) in the cabinet, there hasn’t been any conflict in the name of party differences. God willing, we have the strength now.

“This has caused the opposition’s desperate attempts to fail.

“We do not focus on political party conflicts but on how to raise the dignity of the country,” he said during a dialogue session at the closing ceremony of the Madani anniversary event at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium today.

Anwar was responding to a suggestion by an attendee for the government to establish only one political organisation to avoid the occurrence of “tebuk atap” attempts.

Also present as panellists of the dialogue session were Deputy Prime Ministers Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Fadillah Yusof.

Zahid stressed that all component parties that formed the coalition government remained steadfast with Anwar’s leadership and will continue to give their full support to the premier.

“In fact, in every secretariat meeting, there will be a report.

“Although there are differences in views at the grassroots level, it is not the parties or the presidents’ stance. It is the individual’s opinion,” he told the audience.

Adding to this, Fadillah said all the parties will continue to obey the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree to support Anwar as the prime minister.

He pointed out that the government’s main goal is stability to ensure that the administration can focus on the development of the economy.

Team effort

In a related development, Anwar also rebutted allegations that the ministers are not working as a team.

He said views that the prime minister is alone in steering the government is a misperception as there have been successes made by ministries that did not involve him.

“If we look at Miti (Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry), they have raked in hundreds of billions (of ringgit).

“I was not involved directly, I only gave my support…

“I don’t think it’s possible to achieve success without a strong team and overall leadership commitment.”

Anwar was responding to a question by another attendee who asked if there were efforts made for the cabinet to work as a strong team as it was viewed that the prime minister was the only one shouldering the responsibilities.

In addition, he assured that the government always strives to improve its performance.

He also reiterated that none of the ministers in his administration have been investigated for corruption by the MACC. - Mkini
