Mat Sabu retains Amanah presidency, Mujahid made deputy

KLANG: Mohamad Sabu has retained his position as Amanah president following today’s party elections.

The agriculture and food security minister, better known as Mat Sabu, has led the party since it was established in 2015.

He retained the post by first securing 613 votes to become part of the 27-member central committee.

Meanwhile, Mujahid Yusof Rawa was appointed deputy president.

Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad was promoted as a new vice-president, alongside Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud and Adly Zahari.

A total of 1,003 delegates cast their votes at the party’s national convention this weekend to select Amanah’s new 27-member central committee.

Mahfuz Omar, a former Pokok Sena MP, did not retain his post as vice-president.

A total of 98 candidates contested for the 27 positions in the central committee.

Dzulkefly came in first with 900 votes during the polling while Mohamad came in eighth with 613 votes.

The various posts, including that of president, were then selected based on a separate vote involving just the 27 central committee members, who unanimously chose to retain Mohamad as the party president.

This will be Mohamad’s third and final term as party president.

Under the party’s constitution, the president cannot hold the position for more than three consecutive terms.

Mohamad also urged Amanah’s leaders to focus on strengthening its ties with other parties in the unity government.

“Our relationship with PKR, DAP, and now with Barisan Nasional – as well as the parties in Sabah and Sarawak – are important,” he said.

“Any rifts within this coalition that leads to its downfall will be detrimental to Amanah itself.” - FMT
