MCA Youth, Puteri Umno to join ‘blockade’ on US Embassy

MCA Youth and Puteri Umno are the latest to join a six-day “blockade” on the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, starting from 10pm tonight.

In a statement today, MCA Youth deputy chief Mike Chong Yew Chuan said it stands in solidarity with over 60 organisations, including civil society organisations, student groups and political entities, in their call for an immediate ceasefire of all atrocities committed by Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Palestine.

“MCA does not wish for any continued destruction of Gaza.

“We cannot bear to see anymore Palestinians being brutally maimed or annihilated, whereby the number of casualties has now reached 20,000 victims and continues to grow,” Chong said.

He added that MCA Youth had submitted a memorandum to the Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia Walid Abu Ali on Oct 30 in support of an immediate ceasefire.

Meanwhile, in an updated list sighted by Malaysiakini today, the collective group - dubbed Sekretariat Solidariti Palestin - now consists of 35 CSOs, 15 student groups and 13 political parties.

Among them include the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (Mapim), Sisters in Islam (SIS), Bersih, the Malaysian Punjabi Youth Movement, the various university wings of political parties, Muda, PSM, Pejuang, and the youth wings of PAS, PKR, Amanah, Bersatu, DAP, MCA and Umno (Puteri Umno).

Mega rally

In a statement yesterday, Sekretariat Solidariti Palestin said the demonstrators will pitch tents and stay in the tents throughout the picket.

They are also expected to hold solidarity events each night and erect flags and symbols of the Palestinian struggle.

A mega rally will also be held on Dec 31 as the grand finale.

Earlier this month, the US vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

US vetoed UN Security Council resolution that would have called for ‘humanitarian pauses’ to deliver aid to millions in Gaza

Last week, it threatened to veto another draft resolution, which forced the Security Council to water down the resolution’s language calling for “urgent action” to step up humanitarian aid instead of a “ceasefire”.

The US then agreed not to veto the amended resolution and abstained from the vote, with the resolution passing on Friday.
