PETALING JAYA: Cabinet members must exhibit outstanding performance if they want public servants to support the administration of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, an analyst says.
“Those appointed as ministers must demonstrate exceptional performance, and the primary focus should be on resolving issues involving civil servants,” Hussain Yusri Zawawi from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin told FMT.
“If there is no resolution, support from civil servants will be lost.”
On Saturday, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, commonly known as Mat Sabu, said civil servants would vote for the unity government if its administration remained stable until the next general election.
Mohamad, the agriculture and food security minister, said the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional alliance lost the votes of many civil servants in the August state elections because the opposition had propagated the idea of a government change.
“How could they not believe? The one who said the government would topple after the state elections claimed he had seen Prophet Muhammad in his dream,” he said at the opening of the Amanah Youth convention.
“Yes, those who are from Amanah, DAP or Umno might not believe it.”
Meanwhile, Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said a significant number of civil servants and Malays voted for Perikatan Nasional in the 15th general election and the recent state elections because they felt comfortable with the coalition.
Azmi said the unity government needed to find ways to boost the confidence of civil servants, including by countering negative perceptions of DAP.
“At present, many feel that the current government is either defending or fighting against the influence of DAP… that is the prevailing perception,” he said. - FMT
