More enticing pledges could have helped PAS, says Umno man

PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader says more attractive pledges from the PAS-led Terengganu state government could have helped the Islamic party retain the Kemaman parliamentary seat yesterday.

Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan said pundits must not jump to the conclusion that Terengganu voters have rejected Barisan Nasional as a whole.

He said there was a need for a thorough analysis of the Terengganu state government’s pledges compared to that of the unity government, Berita Harian reported.

“The BN candidate also made five pledges, but we have to compare that with what PAS had offered voters when it governed Terengganu in 2018 and even now.

“Therefore, political analysts must study the Terengganu government’s pledges and its implementation before coming to the conclusion that the people of Terengganu have rejected BN as a whole.

“However, our pledges to the people of the four Malay-majority states, namely Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis, must be more effective in attracting voters.” he was quoted as saying.

Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar defended the Kemaman parliamentary seat for PAS last night, defeating his BN rival Raja Affandi Raja Noor by a whopping 37,220 votes.

Samsuri obtained a total of 64,998 votes while Raja Affandi, a retired general and former defence forces chief, garnered 27,778 votes.

Ahmad said BN must admit its shortcomings following yet another heavy defeat to PAS, though he believed the unity government and Umno need not be disappointed. - FMT
